Conference gives Australian workplaces a courage boost

More than 80 people met in Melbourne on 14 November to explore the role of courage in the workplace at the 2019 Courage Conference hosted by Dina Pozzo from insium and Leading With Courage.

A huge thank you to our Courage Conference partners:

  • The University of Melbourne Centre for Positive Psychology
  • Wavemaker
  • Cirrus Fine Coffee
  • The c-word
  • without whom the conference would not have been possible.

The conference included six Courage Couch interviews, hosted by journalist Lina Caneva; a Courage 360 panel exploring courage across corporate, community and educational sectors; and a keynote and series of courage plays facilitated by Dina Pozzo.

Key takeaways from the day included:

  • Opening the 2019 Courage Conference with her own example of courage by Peggy Kern – “I had to put aside my own fears to reach out for help & this took courage”
  • A definition of courage in the workplace by Dina Pozzo – “Courage is an intentional moral action taken by an individual in the presence of perceived risk and uncertainty of outcome in order to resolve or avert a workplace issue.”
  • Hosting the Courage Couches and the Courage 360 Panel Discussion with Lina Caneva – "It was a truly inpirational day hearing the stories of courage in the workplace"
  • Exploring times when you confuse courage with confidence with Sandra Capponi – “I had confused courage with confidence and I definitely didn’t feel confident, but I stood up for what I believed in and did things even when I didn’t know if I could pull it off”
  • The keys to holding courageous conversations with Jaime McCoy – “Before having a courageous conversation I ask myself: ‘What am I trying to achieve here and is my intent right?”
  • The connection between courage and change/innovation from David Beguely – “Leaders are expected to have courage to lean into change and innovation”
  • The courage to be honest in your reviews of your work with Kelly Beaumont – “It’s courageous to admit when things aren’t working”
  • The courage it takes to show courage with Lindsay Oades – “You need to have courage to show courage.”
  • The courage required for boards with Sam Butcher – “A Board requires a lot of courage. They make the most important decisions for the organisation.”
  • The link between fear and courage by Jak Hancock – “I can put my ‘fear of failure’ to the side and focus on what I’m trying to achieve.”
  • The ethics involved in being courageous with Marianne Roux – “With courage comes ethical reasoning.”
  • Building your courage by putting yourself in someone else’s shoes with Kaye Grant and Nicole Good – “Participating in 'A Day of a Life' gave me the courage to put my hand up for new roles.”
  • The importance of courage in conversations about change with Elizabeth Foley – “Courage is core to having conversations about climate change.”

"We all have courage within…we just need a light shone on it' – Dina Pozzo
